3D Tornadoes

Recently we mentioned a new national initiative to interrupt the volume of big data that is accumulating from the internet, space explorations, and environmental studies. This NASA animation illustrates the value of 3D visualization of data sets gathered during the massive tornadoes that hit the Dallas area on April 3rd. ";" alt=""> Texas Tornados in 3D (credit: NASA) As the new visualization technologies becomes more common, numerous other applications will be emerge and ...

In The Dark

Radiolab is about curiosity. Developed by Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich, the weekly NPR program explores big ideas with an infectious enthusiasm for the mysteries of science and the power of storytelling. Using modern radio production, engaging real-life anecdotes, and a bit the magic, Radiolab has become a sensation since the shows introduction by NPR in 2005. Radiolab now has a live stage tour called In The Dark and it lives up to all the accolades. In The Dark has the two Radiolab ...

Exo-App

The Kepler Space Telescope has discovered a slew of extra-solar planets or exo-planets since it began focusing its powerful lens on the stars three years ago. Some of the new planets are super-weird, potentially made of solid diamond, while others may be more Earth-like in habitability around their parent stars. Now there is an application has been developed so that anyone can follow the Kepler discoveries. Kepler Exo-planet (credit: NASA-Ames) The “exo-app”, called the Kepler ...

Getting Stuck

Years ago I worked on a reforestation planning program in Kenya. Along with a humorous Danish forester, Gunnar Poulson, we travelled around the semi-arid and desert parts of the country looking for suitable sites to establish tree nurseries. Next to the border of Somalia we got stuck in the middle of a dry river bed and were rescued by two teenage herders, stark naked except for their flip-flops and walking sticks. I was reminded of all of this while reading about the similar travails of a ...

Tungurahua Erupts

When the Tungurahua volcano erupts, it does so in a spectacular manner. Tungurahua Volcano eruption (credit: NASA/Taschler) An image captured by an adventure photographer, shows lava pouring down the 5,000 meter (~15,000 feet) high peak in the Cordillera Oriental in Ecuador. An ash cloud is ejected to the side, white clouds flow around the summit, and stars shine above. A massive glacier once existed on the summit but melted away after the increase of volcanic activity in 1999. Over ...

Breaking the Chain

Ecological food webs are intricate, remain stable due to their biological complexity, but can be easily disrupted if over stressed. Some the most delicate food webs exist in the oceans where forage fish are the foundation for all life higher up the chain. Forage fish feeding structures nourish sea birds, tuna, penguins, and marine mammals like whales and dolphins worldwide. Often called “trash fish” or “bait fish” small fish species like krill, menhaden, and anchovies are essential to the ...
