or how a 'silent spring' could turn into a 'wild summer'

Highest, Tallest, Fastest, etc.

We like keeping scores---the highest batting average in baseball, the tallest building in the world, the fastest jet speed to make it into the book of Guinness World Records. The record keepers will now need a new category of Hottest Summer ever recorded in US history. This dubious honor has been awarded to the State of Oklahoma for the Summer of 2011. The National Climate Data Center, a division of NOAA, has determined that Oklahoma has beaten out Texas by two tenths of a degree for the ...

Time for Mountain Film

For the past 25 years over the Memorial Day weekend, a remarkable event occurs deep in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. Known as Mountain Film in Telluride, the 5 day festival brings together  documentary filmmakers, environmental writers, outdoor photographers, and social activists to the tiny 9000 foot high mountain town to present and discuss their latest projects. Mountain Film is “mind candy” for intellectually engaged thinkers. It is one long running conversation that ...

The State of Happiness

Happiness is more than a state of mind. Happiness is a state. Also: a city. A county. A metropolitan area. Specifically, according to Dan Buettner of National Geographic: The state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The city of Singapore. The metropolitan area around Aarhus, Denmark. He wanted an answer to the question: "Where do the happiest people in the world live? What makes a place great, and what do those places have in common?” There are a lot of great books about the ways in which place ...

Learning by Pads

Years ago I was visiting a friend, a senior writer at the local newspaper. Over a nice bottle of wine we were catching up on various news events. Soon, sounds from an adjacent room interrupted our conversation. In a high, squeaky giggle the sound of “hee, hee, hee, hee” could be heard. Quietly, my friend and I peered around the corner of the wall into his home office. Billy, his 3 year old son, was sitting on a pile of books that brought him level with a computer on the desk. The kid, paying ...

Largest Wildfire Ever in New Mexico

Having records stretching back 100 years before the Mayflower and the pilgrims landed in New England, gives New Mexico something to say about historical accounts. The State is now experiencing the largest wildfire in its recorded history and the fire is expanding. The Whitewater-Baldy blaze in the Gila National Forest has burned nearly 300 square miles is the largest wildfire currently raging in the country.
