Vesta Reimaged

Vesta is a massive asteroid now considered a “proto-planet”. The jumbled space rock didn’t receive enough mass from early collisions in the asteroid belt to become a full planet orbiting between Mars and Jupiter. Animators took photographic images from NASA's Dawn mission now visiting Vesta to produce a virtual movie. The raw images were digitally harmonized to create a clear impression of the asteroid’s  mooth plains, valleys, and a huge mountain over 3 miles high. The resulting animation ...

Born at the wrong time

You were born at the wrong time, if you're under 35.  You missed all the great movements. The civil rights movement. The 60s. Even the Reagan Revolution.  You are stuck in a time that is inconsequential. All of our discussions are about meaninglessness. The big topic on CNN is a haircut that happened 50 years ago. The number one topic on Fox news is a bake sale. This must be because there is nothing worth talking about. All of history is over. There is nothing left to do but fiddle with ...

Micro to Macro

As a technology with myriad forms, photography can document reality from the micro to the macro. The uses are only limited by the imagination. The results can be very artistic as well. Adopt-a-Nene

Most people who go to Hawaii spend their time lounging on a beach sipping a tall, cold drink. While those pursuits are pleasurable, a great alternative has been suggested by the Hawaiian conservation and restoration organization, Friends of Haleakala. Named after the famous Haleakala National Park, the Adopt-a-Nene Program allows individuals to protect endangered species and important island habitats from destruction by feral animals and alien plants. Bad News for Bees---Very Bad News

Recently, bees have been dying in huge numbers from unknown causes. This is super-serious as these beneficial pollinators are one of the lynch-pins for ecosystem stability and essential to agricultural, horticultural, and virtually all plant production worldwide. The culprit has finally been identified. It turns out to be a new class of pesticides that act systemically when applied to fields and is absorbed up into tissues throughout a plant. The active agent then becomes present in the ...

The Blob

In 1958, the SciFi film The Blob terrorized movie goers. Now an actual blob various appendages has been videotaped in the South Atlantic ocean. In this instance, the blob is actually a giant jellyfish first discovered in the 1960’s but rarely observed. It’s still creepy. Game Over for the Climate

In Storms of My Grandchildren climatologist James Hansen, the Director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, describes the key concepts of climate change and the underlying science. Hansen points out the deadly consequences of not paying attention to the threats posed by ignoring the rapid increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and makes suggestions for corrective actions. Storms of My Grandchildren (credit: Amazon.com) Hansen has now provided additional insight on ...

An Unholy Alliance

WASHINGTON -- What happened in the halls of congress this week was as rare as a four-leaf clover in the Sahara or an Aurora Borealis over Cleveland.  Republicans and Democrats appeared to agree on the unlikeliest of topics: a piece of environmental legislation.  "It's like the unholy alliance," Pete Olson, a Republican member of congress from Texas, told me. The bill would slash the mountain of paperwork is takes to build hydropower facilities -- especially small ones that don't have an ...

Camera traps are one of the most useful tools for biological and environmental field science. The non-invasive technology can track the movement of glaciers changing under the influence of increased atmospheric temperatures to the movement of rare wildlife in remote locations. The traps monitored by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCF) have just captured images of Cross River Gorillas in Cameroon, West Africa.
