How to say Hello in Dolphin

Anyone who has ever listened to the modulated sounds of a humpback whale or the clickings of a dolphin must have wondered: what are they saying? We may be taking the first baby steps to answer that question. While humans and other land mammals evolved to communicate using vocalizations through gases-- air --marine mammals use sonar-like echolocations transmitted through an aqueous environment-- water --to communicate. The physiology and anatomy of humans and marine mammals evolved ...

Kenya Burning

Reuters is reporting that a raging fire has destroyed at least 2,000 acres of indigenous forest in Mount Kenya National Park. The fire is suspected to have to have been caused by honey harvesters and poachers. The mountain forest is a major water tower in the country, coveres the slopes of the second highest mountain in Africa, and is famous for treks with nearly 30,000 tourists hiking the mountain every year. Simon Gitau, Deputy Warden, Mount Kenya National Reserve said that: "Almost 100 ...

An Invisible Tsunami

The potential for coastal zone flooding caused by climate change has been analyzed by Climate Central. The research organization has produced a new report, Surging Seas, and wants to inform people about the threat and inspire them to take action to keep the crises from getting worse. The results of their new maps aren’t pretty. They indicate that nearly 5 million Americans are vulnerable to sea level increases already. Locations including the coastal Gulf Coast states, Florida, the ...

Cars cause the breakdown of society

Reading an old book about building and city planning. Came across a section about cars. "Cars give people wonderful freedom and increase their opportunities," says the book, "A Pattern Language." "But they also destroy the environment." This book is from the Carter years, and so "destroy the environment" doesn't mean the same thing it means now. It doesn't mean "melt the glaciers" or "raise the seas" or "kill polar bear" or even "enrich Middle East dictators who are basically butt holes ...

Chasing Ice

It never hurts for a new film to receive some positive reviews. Chasing Ice, a new documentary film about climate change that screened at the Sundance Film Festival, just received a good one: “James Balog’s Chasing Ice is the smoking gun on climate change, a beautiful compelling savage indictment of the deniers.” Robert Kennedy, Jr. Chasing Ice Poster (credit: Sundance FF) It will be interesting to learn the wider response when the movie begins screening publically on screens ...

Restore the Colorado River Delta

Here at Riled Up we feel strongly about restoration of damaged lands. There certainly is no lack of places needing attention but none more so than the currently dry delta of the Colorado River. A campaign is underway to Restore the Colorado River Delta , a landscape so degraded that water from the river no longer reaches the Sea of Cortez at the Gulf of California. A petition is gathering signatures to  support an effort to begin the process of river restoration. The petition requires ...

The Scale of the Universe

An interactive animation,  The Scale of the Universe, by Cary Huang is not to be missed. Huang uses very clever illustrations to scale things from atoms to galaxies. Use your cursor to move up or down in the diversity of sizes to the objects. If you’d prefer just watching then this short video should suffice. ";" alt=""> The Scale of the Universe WHB
