You mean Glenn Beck isn't telling the truth?

Serious climate scientist Michael Mann, he of the famous hockey stick of global temperatures, above, takes the time to destroy Glenn Beck's new novel of conspiratorial fiction, “Agenda 21.” It's a good thing he did, because otherwise, how would I know it wasn't true? How would I know that it was a “transparent agenda to sow distrust and cynicism in good faith efforts to protect our environment”? I wouldn't. So thanks, Michael Mann. – Reilly Capps

Titan’s Flow

[Titan’s new river. Credit: NASA] Rivers flow on Saturn’s moon, Titan. Titan is the only world we know of, other than Earth, with liquid on its surface. On Titan, because it’s cold as ice, ethane and methane flow. Quite a shot from the Cassini orbiter. - Reilly Capps

Investors don't have faith in renewable energy

Is now the time to buy green stocks? Or the time to bail on them? The Renewable Energy Industrial Index, which is comprised of the world's 30 largest renewable energy companies, has plummeted, and is now trading at around 90% off its one-time high. Fossil fuel boosters, like Steve Goreham, Executive Director of The Climate Science Coalition of America, are ecstatic. As he writes in the Washington Times. It’s interesting to note that a single oil company, Exxon Mobil, has a market ...

Global Warming’s Odd Equation: More Snow Doesn’t Mean More Ice

Sea levels will continue to rise, even if global warming brings more snow to Antarctica. As the New York Times’ Justin Gillis summarizes a Nature article, the increase of snowfall … will exert increased pressure on ice as it flows downhill toward the sea, causing it to speed up. Icebergs breaking off into the ocean at the mouth of glaciers, and extra ice flowing into floating ice shelves, will return much of the increased snowfall to the sea. So, yeah … even the good news is bad. ...

Waving goodbye to winter?

It may be time to say goodbye to powder days, après-ski parties and the myriad delights of winter sports.  A new report from the Natural Resources Defense Council and Protect Our Winters warns of the potentially dire effects that global warming could have on skiing and snowmobiling, if climate change continues unabated. If warming temperatures shorten North America’s winters and shrink its snowpack, the report says, then the economic lifeblood of mountain towns and the winter sports ...

The Sweeping Shadow

Have you ever experienced a complete and total eclipse of the Sun? It is one of the most powerful of natural events. A time-lapse photographer, Colin Legg, captured the experience in a dramatic video as the eclipse passed over northern Queensland last November. Legg’s results may be some of the best eclipse sequences ever produced. Check it out! WHB .

Sex Ed for Plants

The Story of Troy and Esmerelda … or … Sporn By Lucas Gardner Kids are learning about sex earlier and earlier today and most of them have a grasp of human reproduction before even reaching middle school. Unfortunately, i've found that these children, even by the time they reach high school, still don't fully understand the various means of reproduction in the plant kingdom. Maybe they don't think it's as “erotic” as human reproduction. As an educator, i'd like to do all I can to reach out ...

Running Dry in the Cadillac Desert

The mirage may be vanishing in the Cadillac Desert. Clearly it’s dawning on water managers that the Colorado River is over-allocated, and that a Gordian knot of legal and environmental issues must be untangled, especially if the ongoing drought continues. The famously muddy Colorado River often flows green and placid through the Grand Canyon because its silt is now captured behind Glen Canyon Dam. Bob Ward photo. Two recent developments in river-related law and planning illustrate the ...

The Python Challenge

In its latest effort to eliminate an invasive menace, Florida has developed  The Python Challenge  a strategy to get a handle on the run-away populations of the massive snakes. Pythons were kept by people as house pets but then released when they got too big to manage. Being prolific breeders, the snakes have taken over the Everglades and have eaten everything in their paths every since. The python population is now estimated in the thousands. One snake was recently killed exceeding 17 feet ...

Forecast: Drought and more Drought

Last week, NOAA’s National Climate Prediction Center released new maps depicting the current USA drought situation and the outlook for the first months of 2013. The Center’s outlook: drought and more drought over two-thirds of the nation will continue into 2013. In the largest designated region, the Drought Monitor declared: “large scale drought to persist or intensify”. So far, the impacts from the continued drought on regional agriculture, forests, river systems, or peoples health has ...
