Raffi Lied to Me

Why Letting Your Imagination Run Away With You is a Good Thing By Michaela Capps Growing up in the ‘80s, before Baby Einstein and Baby Mozart, we listened to Raffi every day on the way to school. My favorite one was always “Baby Beluga.” Sing it with me: I sang it at school, around the house, around campfires, on hikes, at night trying to make myself fall asleep. My mom, who was an elementary school teacher, knew how much little kids liked this crap and, at the time, I was ...

Hey Aliens! We’re Here!

I hope whatever aliens are telescoping in on us see this -- the universal number Pi, skywritten over San Francisco. They’ll know we’re an intelligent species. (Photo by Kevin Mathieu, via Laughing Squid.) And I hope the aliens never see this: They’ll fly right on by. - Reilly

As Population Soars, So Does Consumption

The BBC reminds us in a global resources ‘stocks check’ graphic that: “As the world’s population soars, so does its consumption (of materials) stretching many of our natural resources to their limits.” Their investigators gathered natural resource demand data and consumption information from multiple sources to compare with known supplies from 2012 to the end of the 21st Century. Their illustration combining  demand for minerals, fossil fuels, and natural ecosystems is worth a close ...

Solar Art

Like some gigantic abstract art installation, in late August NASA’s sun-orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory captured a solar filament suddenly erupted into space. The explosion produced what is known as a Coronal Mass Ejection. The solar filament had been held in place for several days by the Sun's magnetic field and the massive eruption was unexpected. The resulting eruption threw charged particles off into the Solar System, some of which arrived at Earth and impacted our magnetic field ...

Save Money, Save the Environment … One Cave at a Time

By Bob Ward Who says that saving money and saving the environment don’t go hand in hand? Consider the case of the Glenwood Caverns in Western Colorado, a strange and beautiful system of caves that owner Steve Beckley has made into a popular tourist attraction. Beckley, who opened the Caverns to the public in 1999 and has since developed his mountainside property above Glenwood Springs with other rides and attractions, discovered several years ago that the incandescent lights used to ...
