Romney’s energy rhetoric is so soaring and inspiring, you’ll have to look twice for it

Being moved – emotionally – by Mitt’s ambitious and in-no-way-empty energy plan By Reilly Capps Mitt Romney sure is inspiring, isn’t he? Reading his energy policy, released today, gave me goose bumps. It’s easy to envision the quote that led off the pamphlet, from his book “No Apologies,” being carved in stone on some towering monument: “Spending our energy dollars here for domestically produced energy while also funding research, development, and production of new sources of energy ...

DNA Visualized

DNA is often call the “book of life”. The long strand of letters is actually a coded biological factory for manufacturing other molecules and reproducing itself in a cell. An HD video using molecular visualizations was developed by collaborations at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, Australia to showcase the process of DNA folding and reproduction. The molecular dynamics and shapes seen in the animation were based on X-ray crystallography and massive sets of DNA experimental ...

Are Electric Cars Inevitable?

If they really get to be this easy, with a switchable battery instead of long charging times, like the company A Better Place does in Israel, electric cars just might become unavoidable: This is great for global warming. Of course, electric cars are still cars, which still means huge costs for roads and bridges. It also means nightmare traffic, which always makes me want to murder someone. Or everyone, “Falling Down” style.  Trains would be better. Nobody wants to bash cars with golf ...

Robot Ecology Arrives

Earlier this spring a quadrocopter was spotted hovering over the annual gathering of engaged environmental and social action types known as MountainFilm in Telluride. Above the scenic mountain town’s' main street the dexterity, hover-ability, and photography skills of the little robotic drone were demonstrated. An observer inquired what it might be used for besides being super cool: wildlife and forest monitoring was the immediate answer from the drone operator. Hovering drones and other ...

Old Man River

As the famous show tune says: old man river, he just keeps rolling along. That might have been true for the Mississippi River once but not so true this year. First, the river’s ecosystem has become threatened by an invasive Asian carp that is eating its way up the river towards the Great Lakes; then popular, tourist, paddle boats had to be dry-docked by decreased water and emerging sandbars at Memphis, TN; and now saltwater is surging in from the Gulf of Mexico where barrier islands and ...
