Citizen Scientists Blow Bubbles

Citizen scientists have discovered more than 5,000 space “bubbles” in the disk of the Milky Way galaxy. The star-forming process is more active than previously thought and a major discovery. Over 30,000 citizen scientists volunteered to sift data gathered by the Spitzer Space Telescope using a cool new online tool, the Milky Way Project, that aims to sort and measure our galaxy. The goal of the project is to help scientists learn how stars form, how the galaxy changes, and evolves with ...

About Weeds, Part II

Genetic variability is a wonderful thing. That is until a mutant or invader appears in the mix. Japanese horror flicks on the 1950’s showed the deadly consequences of creatures like monster lizards, moths, and spiders when they were unleashed onto peaceful cities and their inhabitants. Mutant plants and invasive weeds are not too much different in their ecological and economic impacts but they haven’t received a movie credit yet. Recent botanical developments may even that score. DNA ...

In prison, but still a force

Monkeywrecher Tim DeChristopher has been in prison for more than seven months now, serving a two-year sentence. He disrupted an auction in Salt Lake in late 2008, where the government was selling off the rights to drill on some beautiful pieces of land near national parks. DeChristopher acted like a legitimate oilman, bid on and won the right to drill, and then admitted that he didn't have the money to pay. It wrecked the auction, and saved land from being drilled. It remains one of the ...

The Sun Flares Up

The sun has been particularly active of late. A massive solar storm erupted only yesterday, March 5, 2012, and was captured in a short NASA video. Gorgeous auroras will result later this month when the electrically charged solar particles hit the Earth’s upper atmosphere. Your GPS may not point in the proper direction as well. "Do you believe in global warming?"

"Do you believe in global warming?" He asked me. He was a dentist for kids. He had perfect teeth. I was riding public transport with him. He'd seen me reading "The Weather Makers," a book about how man affects the climate. "I mean," he continued. "I know the world is warming. But do you think humans are causing it? Or do you think it's part of natural cycles? Couldn't this just be nature?" I paused to think. I don't know for sure, I said. I'm not a climate scientist. I don't ...

Truth can be Stranger than Fiction

It is often said that history is written by the victors. It might also be said that the survivors of disasters might provide some insights as well. If the huge earthquakes and tsunamis that recently happened near Sumatra and Japan had occurred before written records or technological methods were available, what would survivor stories have been? Their descriptive narratives would certainly have been different from descriptions today but that doesn’t invalidate the factual events they ...

The Anthropogenic Facts of Life

by Conrad Anker Ten years ago the percentage of Americans who believed in anthropogenic or human induced global warming stood at 75%. Fast forward a decade to 2011 the number had dropped to 44%. Has the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere decreased 31% in ten years? The poll, conducted by Harris Interactive, is indicative of the battle being waged over climate change. Lee Atwater, Republican strategist coined the phrase, perception is reality. We believe what is comforting to us. While ...
