It’s Summer---and Endless

It’s summer and hot---and getting hotter. New data has now convinced even one of the most climate skeptics, physicist Richard Muller at UC Berkeley, that the human generated CO2 emissions are the cause of this global  temperature increase. His Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature Institute has just reversed its contrarian position and now accepts the data. Being one of the last of the “climate deniers”, and receiving financial support from several carbon intensive industries, this is a big ...

Columbia Glacier Visualized

Landsat satellites captured images of the Columbia Glacier in Alaska from 1986 to 2011. The glacier originates in the Chugach Mountains and has retreated rapidly creating a new fjord. The image shows ice in blue and vegetation in green. The dark blue that represents ocean water has opened and crept 12 miles (20 kilometers) up the mountain where the glacier used to be during the Landsat observations. The mosaic of images was crafted by the Scientific Visualization Studio at the Goddard ...

Olympics Enthusiasm

I am unabashedly an enthusiast for the Olympics. The idea of the modern Games should inspire anyone even considering all the hoopla that surrounds them. The opening ceremonies in London choreographed by filmmaker, Danny Boyle, depicted scenes from UK history, industrial technology, art, music, dance, and precision engineering. Queen Elizabeth made a surprise entrance along with James Bond to open the 2012 Olympics. The symbolic Olympic Rings were “forged” in a 19th Century UK industrial ...

Ecology for Bankers

Something is up when the US Federal Reserve asks ecologists to help them resolve a banking problem. That is just what happened after the 2008 financial meltdown and collapse of several banks. Understanding how biological systems repair themselves and are restored after catastrophes---natural or human---seems to have much to teach bankers about recovery. This was what the Fed wanted to know. Lordy, lordy, what a remarkable development.   On the surface, the overnight banking system, the ...

'Science of Compassion' conference in Telluride delves into deepest mysteries, debunks them By Reilly Capps Here's a story that made the rounds at a scientific conference this weekend: Researchers interested in the effects of mediation on the brain recruited Buddhist monks for a study. When they started attaching electrodes to the monks' heads, the monks started laughing. Why, the scientists asked, were the monks laughing? The researchers were attaching wires to the wrong part of the ...

Conserve Energy---Be Efficient---Save Money

It is often said: “to save energy, shower with a friend”. That’s good advice but there are heaps of other ways to be energy efficient and also save money with simple lifestyle and building design changes. Bio-mimicry Goes Live

Bio-mimicry is an engineering strategy that takes design direction from the myriads of living organisms and life-forms that have evolved over millennia. The latest effort has produced the first artificial jellyfish that actually swims. Researchers at CalTech and Harvard University crafted the "medusoid" named after the medusa, a classical name for a jellyfish, as a step toward a larger research effort to reconstruct hearts damaged by disease. The new medusoid is the size of a penny and ...
