Researching Whales

When doing research you need the right gear. When the subjects are whales the gear is typically big, specialized, and expensive. A one-of-a-kind research vessel owned by the Center for Marine Research of Western Australia was built to naval standards for just this purpose. Named Whale Song it sails from the tropics to Antarctica looking for the large marine mammals as their populations have slowly increased since whaling was outlawed in the mid-20th Century.       Marine Research ...

Giants of Human Rights

Normally, we focus on environmental, scientific, and technological topics here at Riled Up. However, occasionally something else is important to mention. When two of the worlds greatest voices for human rights, mindfulness, and compassion meet after decades long separation, this is special. His Holiness the Dalai Lama--- the famous Tibetan refugee---and Aung San Suu Kyi ---the Burmese political prisoner finally had the opportunity to meet in London and compare their thinking on political ...

Saudi Arabia Everywhere

On a hike yesterday, coated in sweat, my body a salt lick, on a 104 degree day that tied for the hottest temperature ever recorded ever in my city ever -- ever! -- something in me changed. I knew that heat records are busting. I knew it hasn't rained in months. Fire tore through the West. I could smell it. I glimpsed, through the shimmering, miasmic air that rose off hot soil, a vision of the future. I knew I'd have to stop being Reilly of Aurora, Colo., and began to become someone else, ...

New Skyline

If Seattle were somehow transported to the newly discovered Kepler-36 system, the sky would be very different. Two newly discovered planets orbiting the Kepler start would appear in the night sky. They vary in size and composition---one is molten and rocky while the other is large and gaseous---but have similar paths around their close-by solar host. The night sky would be an impressive sight. A Portrait of a Saint

"Bidder 70," the new movie on Tim DeChristopher: a first stab at creating a legend By Reilly Capps How do you paint a portrait of a saint? One answer: you leave bits out. You paint Saint Sebastian on the tip of the arrow, John’s head upon a plate, Mary stunned by the light of of the angel. You don't paint Sebastian brushing off dandruff, John yelling at his local baker, Mary spanking JC, saying, “You just think you’re God’s gift…” And so what do you do with Tim DeChristopher? 28,000 and Counting

Australian archeologists have discovered panels of Aboriginal art work created 28,000 years ago. The date was determined by radio-carbon dating. The cave contains thousands of images in the Northern Territory rock shelter known as Nawarla Gabarnmang. The cave where the paintings were found may have had been occupied for 45,000 years in the far Australian outback of Arnhemland. The amazing findings will be published in the Journal of Archaeological Science. Discoverer Bryce Barker from the ...
