T. Boone Pickens on Energy

Alternative energy and alternatives to oil have been a frequent topic at Riled Up. Who wouldn’t be for domestic production of clean energy sources, reduced dependence on imports, and saving money all at the same time? The TED Conferences invited the pioneering investor and energy producer T. Boone Pickens to present his perspectives on energy and the policies for development of domestic alternatives to imported oil. The weekend is a good time to catch a TED Talk, listen to something ...

Tragedy of the Commons, shame and couches

I'm fascinated by the Tragedy of the Commons. The BBC has a great introduction to the Tragedy of the Commons here. It's more than worth listening to, because it will clarify in your mind some of the reasons behind the environmental crisis.  The idea behind the Tragedy of the Commons was formulated in 1968 by Garrett Hardin to talk about resources that are common to all of us, such as grazing land and fishing stocks. His paper is here.  Like, with grazing land, doesn't it get ...

Art & Science

Art & Science are thought to be opposite pursuits but often they can mimic each other. Here’s a good example where a robot and an astronaut at work caught in a famous pose in space. The photograph from the International Space Station recalls a famous panel from the Vatican's Sistine Chapel  showing the hand of God reaching out to give life to Adam.  Man & Machine (credit: NASA) Michelangelo would likely be proud. Can you determine which hand is which? WHB

Einstein Survives

Science is a self-correcting enterprise. Everyone involved is trying to dethrone the current “pope” in one scientific discipline of another. Three of the most central dogmas in modern science are Darwin’s principals of natural selection that drives all of biological evolution; Wagner’s deciphering the geological mechanisms of continental drift; and Einstein’s mathematical formula, E=MC2, that defined the nature of matter and energy in the universe. New data is always being put forth to ...

Presser today in SLC

If you’re in Salt Lake City, go by the press conference to be given by DeChristopher’s legal team  at 1:30 p.m. on the steps of the Frank E. Moss Federal Courthouse. Hopefully they’ll have some more information on what happened to get DeChristopher sent to the hole. Check out Bidder70.org and PeacefulUprising.org for more info.

Big Data

When I was a grad student conducting ecological field research in the 1970’s, I spent much time in the mountains. My research consisted of an early examination into the environmental factors influencing restoration of vegetation destroyed by fires in the Colorado Rockies. The project required the collection of copious scientific measurements from multiple study sites across diverse plant species, soil chemistry, light intensity, air temperatures, and fire timelines. All this data was ...

DeChristopher out of the hole

Tim DeChristopher was let out of isolation last night after calls to congress apparently put pressure on the government to let him out. He was, he and his lawyers believed, put in there at a congressman’s direction. His supporters call him a political prisoner, and it certainly sounds like it. They had been calling on President Obama to let him out. But why should directions from Washington (allegedly) determine where a prisoner in California spends his nights? It all smells very bad.

EXCLUSIVE: DeChristopher put in isolation because of a beef with ... Patagonia

It verges on being a thought crime. Tim DeChristopher may have been put in isolation by a congressman who wanted to punish him.  All because he used the word "threat" when talking about one of the world's more eco-friendly companies, Patagonia, RiledUp has learned. The outdoor giant Patagonia donated to his legal defense fund but also partnered with an oil company on a project to restore wildlife habitat. DeChristopher demands that corporations that donate money to him be ethical. He ...

SciFi Moon Revealed

Io is very strange. Jupiter’s innermost moon consists of numerous and massive super-volcanoes. The first images of Io were provided by the Galileo spacecraft that orbited Jupiter and its moons in the 1990’s. The satellite sent back amazing photography of the planet’s moons and discovered Io’s volcanoes  actively erupting. For the first time, scientists at the US Geological Service have created a global geologic map of the volcanically active moon.        Prometheus Eruption on ...
