The Conservation Alliance

Author: Hugh Bollinger/Thursday, March 12, 2015/Categories: wildlife conservation, sustainability, environment, Archive Pick of the Week

It is difficult to love the outdoors unless you can see it. Pictures of the cone-shaped Grand Tetons, the mystical Olympic Peninsula, or the plunging Grand Canyon aren't quite enough. To see the outdoors, you need at least a little gear: kayaks, water bottles, backpacks, etc. The outdoor companies that make these tools share an illustrious mission: they create things that allow you to move through the world with more freedom. All humans are born free, and endowed with a sense of wonder for the world; but without a quality ice-axe, they will never be free to feel wonder from the top of the Eiger.

In 1989, The Conservation Alliance  was formed by four outdoor industry leaders REI (the retailer); Patagonia (the durable clothing company); The North Face (expert mountaineering gear); and Kelty (the backpack manufacturer), These companies shared a common goal of wanting to increase support for conservation efforts nationwide: TCA now has over 185 member companies who pay dues to support Alliance projects that have:

Protected 44 million acres; conserved 2,945 miles of river; removed or halted 26 dams to restore free flowing water; purchased 10 climbing areas; and designated 5 marine reserves.

These grassroots efforts are a hallmark of The Conservation Alliance's approach and are accomplished by their twice yearly  grants program  supporting local non-profit groups implementing specific projects. The Alliance has now become a corporate partner of SWP Media's online environmental and science journal, Riled Up  We will assist TCA in helping them realize additional followers of their fine environmental initiatives.

SWP Media encourages all our readers to take time and learn more about the Alliance, their grants programs, and also to  offer support  to their programs as you can.
