Koala’s Threatened

Author: Guest Writer/Tuesday, May 1, 2012/Categories: Uncategorized

Australia has just listed the koala as a threatened species. The Aussie marsupial has now been declared vulnerable in Queensland, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) where Canberra is located. Many feel the iconic koala should have been listed as an endangered species across the entire continent.

Estimates of koala numbers vary from several hundred thousand to a bit over 40,000 but in parts of Queensland and New South Wales Koala populations have declined by nearly 40% in the past 20 years. Multiple factors have contributed to this decline but loss of habitat, encounters with cars and dog attacks, as well as diseases have been primary reasons.

Massive wildfires in the eucalyptus forests where koala feed have also played an big role. A video from 2009 shows the efforts of first responders to rescue a young koala after a massive bushfire roared through its forest in Victoria:

These little guys are real poster children for protection of wildlife in Australia or anywhere.
