An Icelandic diver and his partners spent their dive, and most of their oxygen, saving a coconut octopus from a bad fate. The marine animal has a strong instinct to protect itself by creating a home using a shell or coconut. The octopus they discovered was trapped by this behavior and had made a home inside a discarded plastic cup. A shell or coconut is strong but an eel or large fish could swallow the cup and octopus probably killing the predator. The divers helped the animal find more appropriate housing and the octopus seems to know it is being presented with an option to consider. This simple bit of compassion also illustrates the huge environmental issue of ocean plastic pollution.
