Mark Plotkin is an ethnobotanist. This is a research field that investigates at wild plants and the indigenous people who know their uses, most unknown to Western science. Plotkin spends much of his time in the topics, particularly in the Amazonian rainforest, meeting with and exploring native healers (shamans) and other tribal people who maintain encyclopedic knowledge of the trees and plants that surround their lives. Plotkin speaks with urgency for both the plants and the people being directly impacted by tropical deforestation for agriculture, mining, and introduced diseases.
