A sea of sand was photographed by the crew of the international space station. The spectacular linear dunes formed from fierce winds blowing from the South Atlantic and hitting Namibia's Skeleton coast. According to NASA:

"since the Namib Desert is very old, dating from when the cold, desert-forming Benguela current began flowing ~37 million years ago, wind and dune patterns have shifted over time. North-oriented dunes have shifted north and east with drier climates and stronger winds, overriding but not removing earlier dune chains and making the rectangular dune network seen today."

The vantage point of the space station makes a perfect landscape-scale view while a small plane allows for a lower perspective to see the stunning dunes of the Skeleton Coast.
