Columbia Glacier...going, going, gone?

Author: Hugh Bollinger/Sunday, November 2, 2014/Categories: natural history, photography, video, environment

Recent photographs and video of the Columbia Glacier in Alaska show major declines in less than 30years. The "river of ice" was discovered in 1794 when it almost extended to the mouth of Columbia Bay. The glacier survived in that position until 1980 when it began a rapid retreat up a now exposed fjord. Infrared satellite photos show the changes between 1986-2014 that have exposed another channel being uncovered.

Video footage captured by the Extreme Ice Survey  Extreme Ice Survey provide a seven year time-lapse perspective on the decline.

Where is the glacier going from here? stayed tuned!
