Flower of the Week: Aussie orchids

Author: Hugh Bollinger/Thursday, October 23, 2014/Categories: natural history, wildlife conservation, photography, plants

Occasional Riled Up contributors Peter & Shirley Dwyer have been exploring the temperate rainforests of a favored national park in southeast Australia for years. They were particularly lucky this spring to see a number of orchids blooming under the forest understory. Most Aussie orchids are terrestrial and grow in the ground under dense canopies. They are hard to grow outside their habitat and are rarely seen in nature. Here is a sampling of three beauties they observed.
