Biodiversity Heros

Author: Hugh Bollinger/Thursday, September 18, 2014/Categories: natural history, wildlife conservation, sustainability, environment

The Nobel Prizes are awarded for excellence in physics, chemistry, and medicine. A Nobel award often represents a winner's lifetime of achievement in these fields. Unfortunately, the Nobel's list of potential sciences for recognition is surprisingly lacking of biological, ecological, or environmental sciences, a major oversight. To help rectify this uneven situation there are now two recent awards organizations that recognizing excellence in the environmental and biological sciences: the  Goldman Environmental Prize  and the  Midori Prize for Biodiversity .

The Midori Prize is a bi-yearly prize honoring individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity at global, regional, or local levels. The goals of the prize are to extend the developmental influence of an individual’s efforts to various projects relating to biodiversity throughout the world and to raise awareness about biodiversity.

This year the Midori prize was awarded to the following three individuals:

Kamal Bawa of the  Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment  India;
  Dr. Alfred Oteng-Yeboah of the National Biodiversity Committee of Ghana; and Bibiana Vilá National Research Council and Vicuñas, Camelids and Environment, Argentina .

According to the Midori awards committee: "It is now high time for us to take actions in ways to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity in order to share the blessings of the ecosystem and the biodiversity that sustains our beautiful earth".

Congratulations to the deserving winners and Amen to the Midori Prize focus!
