Master Huddlers!

Author: Hugh Bollinger/Wednesday, December 18, 2013/Categories: natural history, wildlife conservation, video, birds

Penguins are amazing birds. The aquatic avians are known for being well adapted to their frigid environments. However, they use more than just super-downy feathers to sustain themselves in extreme Antarctic landscapes.

A video of Emperor Penguins shows how their social behavior to huddle helps to sustain them from the cold. Physicists investigated how penguins moved in their huddle as a “traveling wave” not unlike cars in a traffic jam. The science behind their "master huddlers" is fascinating.
