Wind Map and the Big Picture

Author: Guest Writer/Thursday, March 29, 2012/Categories: Uncategorized

Two Google scientists have produced a Wind Map of the United States. It was created by Fernanda Viégas and Martin Wattenberg, members of the Big Picture visualization research group in Cambridge, Mass. The new map is updated hourly with wind velocity information from the National Weather Service’s forecast database

The Google researchers are pioneering the use of new visualization and animation techniques made possible by the availability of “big data” sets now emerging from environmental, atmospheric, and astronomical observations. The new wind map offers great insight for weather prediction and climate change modeling.

It is also beautiful and mesmerizing.
