Sulawesi is a large island in Indonesia. Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) captured a stunning view of the north arm of the island at sunrise. According to NASA, he darker areas in the lower portion of the photo mark the edge of the day-night line or terminator. This region of the Southeast Asian tropics is generally cloudy sitting directly on the Equator. In the foreground, the rising, low-angle sun produced long shadows reflections from the tall clouds.

Sulawesi has a rich biodiversity of plants and animals. Endemic wildlife includes the Sulawesi Hornbill, the Crested Black Macaque, and the big-eyed Tarsius. As with elsewhere in Indonesia, deforestation, land clearing, and poaching are directly affecting these rare species.
