If you have a feeling that summers seem hotter, the latest temperture data is in, has been analyzed, and you're right---it is! It hit nearly 130F in parts of South Asia this month.

Visuals are helpful in summarizing years of 'big data' gathered across the northern hemisphere. They show that average summer temperatures have moved up from a baseline period (green bell curve) when compared to hotter than normal (red curves on the right) and colder than normal tempatures (in blue plots on the left). By 1981, the bell curve begins shifting visably to the right and becoming 'the new normal'. The bell curve has also widened because individual summer heat events (anomalies) have become more common now.

The Goddard Space Flight Center and NASA created several data visualizations to show how the increase in summer temperature unfolded over the timeline;

as combined temperature graphs of using 1980-2015 as the baseline average with the hottest summer anomaly in 136 years (2016) shown;

and as a data animation.

The connection between atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and temperature has been scientifically recognized for near 200 years. The data now confirms, it is getting hotter even over a short time frame.

Future summers will be very unpleasant and in some places deadly!
