A long-standing debate has asked which factor plays a more important role in development: DNA or the environment? Moshe Szyf of McGill University, working in behavorial epigenetics, is show that early influences in a baby's environment play a fundamental role in influencing DNA to modify itself to its surroundings. In his studies, Szyf used experimental genetics to answer the question of how 'nurture shapes nature' and where both are important.
