Elon Musk's cutting-edge company Tesla Motors and its energy subscidiary Solar City continue to amaze. Combinding their renewable energy skills with storage battery innovations, they have replaced diesel as the fuel powering the island of Ta’u in American Samoa 4,000 miles from California. Solar City constructed an operational solar-electric power plant, storage battery facility, and grid that now supplies virtually 100% of the island’s electricity needs.
According to a company announcement, the "battery storage-enabled microgrid that can supply nearly 100 percent of the island’s power needs from renewable energy, providing a cost-saving alternative to diesel, removing the hazards of power intermittency and making outages a thing of the past".
A video produced by Solar City shows their efforts to solarize the island.
Elon Musk continues "lighting the way" with his vision of a more sustainable energy path, that also protects the environment, with his foresight in applying appropirate technologies. Now, the question is how fast other islands, states, or nations with follow his impressive lead.
