Dam Removal and River Restoration Project, Washington State (credit: American Rivers)
What better way to celebrate rivers than with the removal of "deadbeat dams". The river conservation and advocacy organization American Rivers has recognized a recent short film on what happened to two rivers after their plugs were removed. Maser Films produced Year of the River to document the removal of dams on the Elwha and White Salmon rivers in Washington State. As the film shows, the two dam removal projects were the largest to date and a turning point in efforts to restore rivers for migrating fish, recreation, and indigenous culture.
Hopefully, more dams will be removed and releasing free-flowing rivers once again.
