Unknown Ceres

Author: Hugh Bollinger/Thursday, August 6, 2015/Categories: natural history, video, space science

The  Dawn spacecraft  is nearing the dwarf planet   Ceres . The unknown object discovered in 1801, and possibly a failed planet from the formation of the solar system, lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

Ceres is beginning to appear as yet another real world in a newly released photo-composite video from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at CalTech. It is indeed a strange place. It may even have a volcano spewing molten material of some sort.

When Dawn goes into orbit about Ceres later this year an answer may to the volcano question may then emerge.
