The latest series of cutting-edge X-Prizes were awarded. What is an X-Prize you ask?

According to the organization:

"An XPRIZE is a highly leveraged, incentivized prize competition that pushes the limits of what’s possible to change the world for the better.
It captures the world’s imagination and inspires others to reach for similar goals, spurring innovation and accelerating the rate of positive change. The prize is an innovation engine and a facilitator of exponential change."

The prizes are given out in such areas of investigation considered as  Grand Challenges  including::energy and the environment; exploration; global development; learning, and the life sciences. The role of creative competition, solution practicality, and economic affordability are critical elements in the design criteria of the  projects. Based in California, the Foundation's directors and advisers reads like a "who's who" of technology entrepreneurs, media, and venture capital leaders and they aim to make a big difference with the awards granted to X-Prize teams.

New technologies for analyzing and sustaining the health of the oceans received several awards sponsored under the  Wendy Schmidt Ocean Health Prize  in the latest round of prizes. Those were announced  here  and a video presents one of the "grand challenges" in the oceans that is being tackled:
