The natural world. Looking pretty for 3.5b years.

Martian Selfie

Author: Hugh Bollinger/Friday, June 27, 2014/Categories: natural history, photography, space science

It has been a Martian year since the mobile explorer, Curiosity, landed to examine the Martian landscape at Gale Crater. What an appropriate time to take a birthday selfie.

Using a camera mounted on its robotic extension arm, the lander snapped a series of photos of itself. The camera arm was edited away by the imaging team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech. The resulting composite shows the mobile lab at one of its study sites.
