Loosing Gas

Author: Hugh Bollinger/Thursday, February 20, 2014/Categories: video, sustainability, environment

Natural Gas represents a good opportunity as a "bridge fuel" by replacing coal in electrical power generation as more sustainable sources are developed. By some estimates, burning natural gas could represent nearly a 50% reduction in of CO2 production vs burning coal. As a transition to non-carbon producing energy sources, it makes sense to utilize this natural resource as fast as possible.

Here's the catch---natural gas wells can leak methane into the atmosphere and methane is a stronger greenhouse gas than CO2. However, new research by engineers at Stanford University is showing how to control leaking wells with a new technology. Here's a video about their research:

It makes perfect sense moving away from burning coal with all its associated pollution problems. If natural gas helps us along a path to more renewable energy sources this is great. However, we don't want to be loosing gas in the process.
