Penguin-cam, live for now

Author: Hugh Bollinger/Monday, October 7, 2013/Categories: natural history, video, birds, sustainability, environment

The Penguin Camera---penguin cam---is operated by the US Antarctic Program based at Palmer Station in Antarctica. The camera operates from October to February on Torgersen Island, the home to approximately 2500 Adelie penguins during their breeding season.

The penguin-cam video feeds normally begin operations in October. However, as the Antarctic Program is financed by the National Science Foundation, it is unknown how the current government shutdown will affect the camera or the scientific research underway at Palmer Station.

The Adelie penguins will likely continue to raise their chicks without 'prying eyes'.
