The 3rd Pole

Tshering Tobgay, the former prime minister of Bhutan, offered a heart-felt call for the nations straddling the Himalayan mountain ranges to join forces and combat climate change. He spoke about the Third Pole which holds the third largest source of water as ice and glaciers after the North and South Poles. Tobgay noted that if current melting rates continue, two-thirds of the Himalayan glaciers may be gone by the end of this Century. He asked, what will then happen to the "water tower of Asia" which is the source for water that over two billion people rely upon? The regions glaciers are the water sources for Asia's major rivers. He suggests that protecting Himalaya's glaciers may bring the trans-Himalayan nations into mutual cooperation to focus on dealing with this existential environmental and social issue.
