Massive waves have been pounding the central California coastline for several days. They have been driven by low-pressure storm systems moving down the West Coast from the Gulf of Alaska. Predications have ranged from 20 to 40 foot high waves with some potentially reaching 50 feet high.

The National Weather Service, a division of NOAA, issued an extreme warning to beachgoers saying: "stay well back ... or risk certain death"  on beaches around San Francisco south to Monterey. The waves were so huge that the famous Mavericks sufing competition was cancelled. Some surfers didn't heed the warning and dangerous wipe-outs happened.
