Today is Giving Tuesday, the international event organized to help support worthwhile non-profit endeavors. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the mega-shopping events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, GivingTuesday's goal is different. It is focused on programs where you can offer your time, financial donations, goods, and a voice. Why not consider supporting programs that work for the conservation, the arts, and science?

Here are 3 suggestions for non-profit initiatives at a local, national, and global scale that are worthy of your consideration and a donation of support:

Oceana: Oceana was founded in 2001 and is the largest international advocacy organization focused on ocean conservation. The organization's goal is to make the world's oceans as rich, healthy, and abundant as they once were. They seek to make the oceans more biodiverse and abundant with policy "victories" in the countries governing much of the world's marine life. Ocean's marine campaigns work on policy-oriented and science-based initiatives that help save the oceans and feed the world. Their projects advocate for restoring marine biodiversity, increasing ocean abundance, and protecting habitat through conservation "victories" in countries that deliver nearly 25 percent of the world's wild fish catch. On this Giving Tuesday only, a group of anonymous donors will match every individual donation, dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000. If you donate by midnight, your support is doubled and will directly help Oceana's efforts at protecting and restoring the world's oceans.

The Entrada Institute: The Entrada Institute was founded in 1992 by a diverse group of desert enthusiasts wishing to share their knowledge of southern Utah's redrock landscapes with like-minded arts and outdoor enthusiasts. The organization now offers wideranging programs including: readings, music concerts, science lectures, cowboy poetry slams, and other events that enrich cultural life. They provide artists, scholars and earth scientists a new way to share their work. Many of our artists, entertainers, and workshop instructors return year after year, sharing their love of teaching, singing, or recitation with audiences. The Institute’s work has been recognized with articles appearing in local and regional media. One commentator described Entrada as “an organization dedicated to preserving the red rock country and its heritage through arts, science, and education.” You can individually support their work with a donation today that will assist Entrada's ongoing programming to offer a platform for artists, musicians, and scientists working to sustain the Colorado Plateau.

The Conservation Alliance: TCA is the non-profit environmental organization of the manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers of the outdoor recreation industry. Founded in 1989 by four companies, Patagonia, REI, The North Face, and Kelty, the organization has now helped protect over 50 million acres, 2,991 miles of wild rivers, removed or halted 29 dams, purchased 12 climbing areas, and designated 5 marine reserves. TCA's vital work is particularly important now considering widespread threats to wild lands and their official protection. Dues from TCA's now 200+ member companies goes to support specific conservation efforts via their bi-annual grants program. $800,000 was dispersed to individual projects this past summer, alone. As an example of support for this Giving Tuesday, the gear outfitter Arc'teryx  will donate the revenues from their online sales today to the Alliance. You can make an individual donation to the Alliance and know your support will go directly towards protecting wild landscapes for future generations to experience and enjoy.

These are just three organizations worthy of support. While it is important to offer a donation on this Giving Tuesday, you can show support for such positive initiatives any day of the year.
