Today is National Public Lands Day. Sponsored by the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) this annual day encourages people across the US to support and protect public lands for the future. Various educational, clean-up, and restoration projects are undertaken to engage local participation. By connecting people with a natural landscape the Foundation, and all their associated partners, hopes to inform a wider public of the environmental benefits these lands provide.

Besides local projects, 'national' includes elected officials who play a critical role in designating and protecting public lands. Senator Lemar Alexander from Tennessee offered a personal perspective on how he came to be a public lands champion.

One participating partner of the NEEF is The Conservation Alliance the non-profit organization created by the outdoor gear manufacturers and retailers to promote environmental projects. One of organization's members, Merrell the footware company, will donate 10% of their sales today in support of TCA's ongoing conservation projects and advocacy.

While one day helps to focus attention on public lands' issues, it reminds people that conservation is necessary year round. You can offer your support with a personal donation to assist this work any day.
