In the Cenozoic, 'size mattered'!

The era of mammals began at the end of the Cretaceous Period 65 million years ago with the extinction of the dinosaurs that kick-started our evolution. If you were a typical human back then walking hills, plains, and valleys of the era, how would you compare to an elephant bird, a giant sloth, or a cave bear? In physical size, we were relatively minor mammals in comparison to those beasts and many others.

It's a wonder we survived and propered, likely at the expense of these extinct beasts, instead of just becoming fossils:
