Installation of solar electric panels (photovoltacs PV's) continue to defy projections. In 2002, the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicted the rate of solar PV adoption, in gigawatts of capacity added, would grow by incremental yearly rates. Auke Hoekstra, an engineer and researcher with the Netherlands Technical University of Eindhoven, now has shown that the IEA forecasts were too conservative when compared to records of solar energy installations. He recently commented to the magazine Mother Jones:

"In my work with other radical innovations, experts are simply very conservative in their own field. A conservative mindset makes it possible to reject empirical data that suggests radical change."

Hoekstra offers a similar viewpoint on the adoption of electric vehicles in this translated speech:

Likewise, the solar pioneer Tesla has just introduced an energy-generating roofing tile that could transform individual home solar production. Elon Musk had a vision in college that solar energy, electric cars, and battery storage would be combined to bring on a revolution. He's taken the idea of "living off the grid" very seriously ever since. Orders for Tesla’s new roof tiles began in May with the first installations in California this month with the rest of the USA this year. As Musk told shareholders at the Company's annual meeting:

“This is a fully contained energy solution that we can scale for the world".

Visionaries like Auke Hoekstra and Elon Musk continue racing forward with 21st Century energy solutions while others are galloping backwards with their 19th Century strategies. You likely know who is going to win that race.
