Ancient Coral Garden on a Seamount, Southern Ocean (credit: Laura Robinson, YouTube)
Laura Robinson from Bristol University in the UK studies massive undersea mountains, seamounts. Robinson documents the geochemical processes that govern climate on timelines ranging from the present back through hundreds of thousands of years. Using uranium istopes and radiocarbon dating she analyzes thousand-year-old corals to discover how the ocean changes over time. By studying the marine history embedded in the corals, clues to what may happen to the oceans may appear. Her recent TED presentation showcased some of the mysterious creatures she has discovered she and how studies of marine mountains may help understand future changes to the marine environment.
