Studying an ecosystem can be a complex problem. A tropical forest or a coral reef defines the very idea of complexity. But are such inter-connected systems complicated to understand and manage? Big data mapper and ecologist, Erik Brewlow, thinks not. It's just a matter of identifying the key links in a system to identify their critical influences.

Brewlow has applied his visualization methodology from forest ecosystem management to military strategic analysis. His ongoing research focuses on data-driven stewardship of natural ecosystems and to advising on simplyifing other complex situations to better understanding them.
