December 11th is  International Mountain Day  when the critical importance of mountains is recognized for their role in providing water, habitation for people and wildlife, opportunities for recreation, and spiritual reasons. International Mountain Day was first organized with the adoption of Managing Fragile Ecosystems: Sustainable Mountain Development at the UN Conference on Environment and Development in 1992.

This year, Mountain Day takes on an additional special meaning as mountain environments were included in the successful climate change meetings in Paris. This big achievement was assisted by the Mountain Partnership that campaigned to gather enough signatures so that place mountain issues would be included as a critical climate matter in the negotiating documents at the Paris conference. Numerous readers of Riled Up joined the campaign and assisted in reaching the goal.

Congratulations and remember to celebrate Mountain Day every day!
