Andromeda

Author: Hugh Bollinger/Wednesday, August 5, 2015/Categories: natural history, photography, space science, art and design

The Milky Way's next door neighbor, at 2.5 million light years distant, is Andromeda. A new ultraviolet image of the spiral galaxy was captured by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and shows intense star formation, The rings have been interpreted as evidence Andromeda collided with a smaller neighboring elliptical galaxy more than 200 million years ago. The Milky Way and Andromeda are racing towards each other and will combine in a long distant future.
