The giant trees of the temperate rainforests in the Pacific Northwest are huge, magical, and surprisingly poorly understood. Understanding their ecosystem better will improve conservation and management of forest restoration efforts.

The author Richard Preston, The Hot Zone and The Wild Trees , explores the dimensions of these giants using the tools of a mountaineer to access their canopies. Preston offers his perspective on redwoods and other forest giants in this terrific presentation at a TED conference:
