Gulf Rememberance Day

Author: Hugh Bollinger/Monday, April 20, 2015/Categories: marine life, sustainability, environment

Five years ago today, the oil drilling platform known as the Deep Water Horizon, exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. A gusher of oil erupted for 87 days from the floor of the Gulf until it was finally capped by British Petroleum and their drilling partners.

The losses of human life, to wildlife habitat and commercial fisheries, tourism revenues, and environmental qualities has been widely documented. Restoration programs continue in the Gulf but it is worthy of remembering these consequences from the oil spill disaster, particularly as Earth Day nears.
