One of the most iconic of Australian symbols is the gigantic megalith known Ayers Rock to its European discoverers. It stands alone in the central desert near Alice Springs. The rock is also known as  Uluru  to the traditional aboriginal people of the Outback, represents a sacred site in their  Dreamtime  myths, and has a UNESCO World Heritage designation.

It has now been photographed from space.
