Ita's Rain Falls

Author: Hugh Bollinger/Monday, April 14, 2014/Categories: natural history, environment

Riled Up noted a track of Cyclone Ita as it approached northern Australia recently. The Category 5 storm could have caused massive damage but decreased to a Category 1 tropical depression, as soon as it neared land.

NASA generated a "big data" graphic (in 3D) showing dramatic rainfall totals that fell on tropical Queensland during the storm. The weakening cyclone generated rainfall at a maximum rate of nearly 7 inches/hour over the Coral Sea and Queensland coast with many locations far exceeding this.

This would not have been a good time to be enjoying these tropical Australian beaches!
