The Fierce Beauty of a Hurricane

The Earth spins and the air moves. Pressures drop, and that hole pulls in moisture. Like a draining toilet the moisture swirls. Hurricanes form.

This is a very recent picture of Haiyan, possibly the most intense hurricane in recorded history, and it is right now slamming into the Philippines. Winds of 195 mph. More powerful than Tip, a hurricane that was as big as the western United States.

The Earth is not an elegant or finely tuned machine. It is a top spun by a child on the edge of a kitchen table.

Almost all destructive things have their own perverse beauty.

Fire is often said to dance.

Bullets look like high divers splashing into a pool.

These things are only beautiful from a distance.

Inside all of them -- it's hell.
